Lockouts
It is recommended by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) that before work is begun on a machine a lockout be
placed on the switch and each electrician, maintenance person, or other workman who will
be involved in the job, place his own padlock on the lockout. Even though a lockout
is used, it is recommended be MSHA that the worker test the equipment with a voltage
meter. This will insure that all power sources to the machine are locked out. As each
person finishes they remove their lock, but the lockout remains attached to switch box
until all locks have been removed.
